IPL 2011 Schedule Announced

Indian Premier League, owned by BCCI has announced Schedule or Fixtures for the upcoming IPL 2011 season. The opening and closing match of the IPL would be held in Chennai. As per BCCI policy, winner of the last IPL season gets the opening and closing ceremony matches.

KOCHI IPL NEWS

The Kochi Tuskers Kerala [ Images ] (KTK) team is all set to play most of their Indian Premier League [ Images ] (IPL) matches of the fourth edition at their home venue, said the co-owners of the franchise.


The Kochi team will be based out of Kochi and will play five matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru [ Images ] Stadium.

KTK, who will make their debut in the upcoming IPL season IV, starting on April 8, is scheduled be play the inaugural match against Royal Challengers [ Images ] Bangalore here on April 9.

Expressing satisfaction with the arrangements at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here, one of the owners of the Kochi team, Dhaval Shah who visited the stadium, told reporters this would not be one season affair only.

"We are here for good. We will have all our matches here every year," he said.

Two other co-owners Vivek Venugopal and Ranji Patel, were also present at the stadium.

The team owners have written to the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) to shift two matches scheduled at Indore to Kochi.

"We are yet to get a reply from the BCCI."

The owners said they had earlier written to the IPL governing council to shift the venue from Kochi as there were uncertainties about getting it as a permanent venue.

But now the problem has been solved as the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has got the stadium leased from the Greater Cochin Development Authority for five years.

Vivek Venugopal said they have requested the Kochi corporation to give a 100 per cent waiver of entertainment tax.

"The corporation has agreed for 50 per cent waiver as of now," he said.

The owners also expressed satisfaction at the efforts made by the KCA to get the stadium ready.

The practise session of the Kochi team will start from March 26.

The players, who are participating in the World Cup, would take part in the practise sessions and team coach Geoff Lawson is also expected to reach here by this weekend, KCA sources said.

Kochi : Kochi Cricket Pvt Ltd (KCPL) the latest entrant into the IPL family, unveiled its logo and name--''Kochi Tuskers Kerala''-- selected through an online voting initiative.

A press release here today claimed supporters came out in large numbers to provide their inputs and back their team during the voting initiative.

It was their energy and enthusiasm which made this one of a kind special initiative a run-away success.

Such an encouraging response made the naming process exciting and a memorable occasion, the release said.

The owners of the Kochi franchise have announced the Indi Commandos will be rebranded as the Kochi Tuskers Kerala after fans voted for a new team name in an online poll.

The new name was approved by the BCCI and IPL governing council on Saturday night allowing Kochi Cricket Pvt Ltd, a consortium of the six companies that are shareholders in the franchise to announce the new name.

"The state animal of Kerala is the Asian Elephant, also known as the Indian Elephant. Therefore the appropriateness in selection of the Team Kochi IPL name, Kochi Tuskers Kerala by the fans all over India cannot be ignored," said Mukesh Patel, the director of Kochi Cricket Pvt Ltd

"Elephants are the largest land animals alive today and their tusks are attractive, sharp and intimidating," he added.

Having originally called the franchise the Indi Commandos, Team Kochi caused controversy by announcing the unusual name last month much to the horror of cricketing fans in Kochi and to the amusement of pretty much everyone else.

With the controversy showing no signs of dying down the team announced a competition for fans to pick a new team name in an apparent attempt to appease disgruntled fans.

The owners gave fans six nicknames to choose from including the Commandos and 5 new ones which included the Titans, Tigers, Tuskers, Heroes and United.

The Kochi team in the fourth edition of the IPL will be called 'Kochi Tuskers Kerala', a name decided on through an online poll.

The team, which will be led by Mahela Jayawardene, had previously decided on the name 'Indi Commandos'. That has been now discarded in favour of 'Kochi Tuskers Kerala.'
Kochi IPL is a newly added team to the Indian Premier League from the season 2011 onwards. The team was one of the two cricket franchises which were added by BCCI in the IPL team list after auction held in the March 2010. The Franchise team is owned by Rendezvous Sports World, which is infact a consortium built up of mulitple companies including Anchor Earth, Parinee Developers, Film Waves, Anand Shyam Estate and Rendezvous owned by Gaikwad Family.

Earlier, team was got into trouble after their owners disagree from the earlier pattern of share holding. Rendenzvous group, part of Gaikwad family insisted 25% share holding in the team while another group led by Anchor Earth ask to reduce Rendezvous holding to 10%. This led to dispute, exchange of several letters from and to BCCI. On the 27 October BCCI announced 30 Day notice to Kochi Franchise to submit all document within period or face suspension of the team.

Until the last day there was no hope of revival of the team but efforts from former External Affairs minister and others resolved the issue between both group of Kochi Franchise. At last on the last day both submitted letter confirming, that dispute has been resolved and it would take another five days to submit all the necessary details regarding Kochi Franchise. After much speculation it was finally announced by the BCCI that they would participate in the 2011 IPL Season.

After being entry into the IPL by Kochi Franchise, now all the states in South India region has their own IPL team. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh already have IPL Franchise team of their own. According to former External Affair Minister Shashi Tharoor, the Kochi IPL team would be for whole Kerala. After the initial years of operation, team will move their matches to other secondary towns within Kerala to promote cricket and tourism along side.

The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) has begin the construction of new world cup class International stadium near Edakochi, just few kms away from Kochi city. According to reports, capacity of the stadium would be of around 50,000 spectators. Until stadium is built, Kochi IPL is planning to host their matches at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium owner by city municpal on lease. JNS has already hosted several One Day International matches at the stadium, but most of them has been abadone due to rain and bad weather leading to critizm of ground facility. Team is thought to be in contact with Pakistan cricket team coach Geoff Lawson to coach the IPL Franchise team but officially no party has confirmed this.

Similarly Logo of the IPL Kochi franchise ‘INDI Commandos’ was also released on their official facebook page. “We are now ‘INDI COMMANDOS’!!! Check our team logo!” it said. The Kochi franchise is the last of the IPL teams to get a name. Earlier Sahara Pune Warriors already announced their name way back in September 2010.
